gleisdreieck – urban transformation project of a former train station terminal
design: PASEL-K Architects with KCAP Architects + Planners, size: total: 112.000 m2BGF perimeter core area: 4 ha location: Berlin, Germany date: 2015 status: Competition client: COPRO Projektentwicklung GmbH, Berlinc collaboration: ARGUS Verkehrsplanung, KEOTO Energie und TOPOTHEK 1 Landschaft
Dominated by urban flows and public transport lines of the national ICE train network, the regional S-Bahn connections and the municipal Berlin Underground that cut through the site in different angles and direction, the 4 ha plot consists predominantly of heavily loaded infrastructural spaces and adjacent left-over wastelands. Located at the edge of the popular, newly developed Gleisdreieckpark in the heart of Berlin, the multifunctional inner city hub, comprises offices, hotels, shopping and commercial areas, event spaces and public facilities. In order to generate a fully flagged urban middle for the future, a productive new part of the city is established to fulfil both a new centre in itself as well as the programmatic continuation of Potsdamer Platz. Due to the complexity of urban infrastructure and the juxtaposition with a 112.000 m2program, the design proposes nine high-rise buildings on an urban plinth that connects the project to its urban context, including public areas, elevated public spaces and parks and recreational areas.
