The urban design focuses on the transformation and redevelopment of the so-called City East in the heart of Mönchengladbach, a middle size German city. The former freight terminal belonging to the central train station area comprises almost 15 ha of abandoned railway tracks. The derelict area was to be converted into a lively, mixed-use, inner city area including residential projects, office and commercial spaces, cultural institutions und public facilities. The landscape design was used to connect the newly developed core area to the city’s existing tissue. Particular attention was paid to a broad participatory approach that included local stakeholders in the development process.
