bml 36 – extension and modernisation of an urban villa from the 30ties

location: Rotterdam, The Netherlands
date: 2011-14
status: completed
client: private
The design reflects the rapidly changing needs in housing by creating a dialogue between the architecture of the modern movement of the 30iesand contemporary issues regarding the requirements of today’s life. The design respectfully maintains the urban villa as build by famous Dutch architect Kraaijvanger. The traditional brickwork from the 30iesand the newly build extension, erected in an ultra thin fibre concrete construction correlate in a confident yet respectful way. The deep and story-high concrete fins of the extension allow for privacy and a maximum of natural daylight at the same time. Simultaneously regulating the natural shading of the glazed façade as well as the visual connections to the inside the residence.
